Number 1 Safety Tip for New Year: Use Firecrackers Responsibly

Yesterday night, a local TV news program was reporting about three different fires which happened at separate regions of the country. The first report was about a shopping center in Ormoc City which killed 24 people. The fire was said to start from firecracker piles; the death was caused by negligence as reported. It was said that the fire exit was locked (I think this kind of “stupidity” can likely make it to the Pinoy Stupid Blog). A fire also hit Marikina last Tuesday burning down 20 houses and injuring 4 people. Investigation also shows that the blaze came from firecracker explosion. A while ago, two fireworks factories in Negros Occidental were burned down. Over the past days, there have been numerous reports of fires resulting to lost of lives, homes and properties – most of them rooted from one cause, firecracker. In the coming few days before New Year’s Eve, we should expect news about numerous cases of disabilities caused by firecrackers.

These disasters could have been prevented if only people use firecrackers or fireworks responsibly; if only people were unbeaten by ignorance about the proper use of fireworks; if only people were not stubborn enough.

There are numerous fireworks safety tips available in the internet and through media campaigns, although I have observed that TV networks lately do not show anti-fireworks campaigns. People are surrounded by information about safety and are provided with intelligence to know safety, but these are overshadowed by ignorance and stubbornness.

September 1, 2009 (Tuesday) marked another historic event in Philippine politics as Senator Mar Roxas withdraws from presidential race for Senator Noynoy Aquino. Sen. Roxas was applauded for his selflessness and integrity.

Here is the transcript of Sen. Roxas' speech last Sept. 1, 2009 at Club Filipino, Greenhills, San Juan:

Country above self. Bayan bago ang sarili.

Iyan ang habilin ng aking lolo, President Manuel Roxas.

Our nation is in trouble. Leadership is bankrupt. Institutions are in disarray. People are hungry.

Noynoy Aquino and I share the same outrage over the mess we are all in, the same way we share the solution-clean, honest, selfless public service.

Marami at matindi ang mga problema ng bansa. Kailangan nating ayusin. Matindi ang kalaban. We need a determined force for good far stronger than the festering evil around us.

We need to fight just as our own fathers fought dictatorship, and just as both died believing that good will conquer evil.

Noynoy and I want to make a difference, but we also know that we need to unite to achieve what we want.

CONGRATS to the new doctors of medicine!

Congrats to all of the passers of the recent Physician Licensure Exam. A graduate from the UST College of Medicine got the top. UP-Manila has the most board passers. Our school (Mindanao State University) had produced 18 out of 26 new doctors if I am not mistaken. Hope these new doctors stay in the country and serve their countrymen. There's no other job more fulfilling than having a noble job and serving your fellow countrymen.

One of the top performers of Batch 2005 (from our school) did not make it. When we heard the sad news, the first thing we thought of was, "She didn't make it, 'pano na lang tayo?" That was pessimism on our part but we can't avoid ourselves from thinking of that scary instance. Taking the boards is really a big task to deal with. Apart from the tension and heartaches it brings, you have to deal with the expectations of the school and your family most especially. You also have to deal with your degrading self-esteem and keep on questioning yourself "Why? They made it but why didn't I?" Nakakalungkot nga minsan pag examination week na, how much more pag board exam na! Maybe it's hard at the beginning but then you have to move on and try again.

Blospot vs. Xanga

I was a CXA (Certified Xanga Addict) one year ago. I was obsessed with blogging. I didn't care much of the anatomy lectures because I had to think of something good to post in my Xanga.

When I realized I was spending too much of my time in the internet, almost neglecting my studies which demands my full attention (as our doctors say), I stopped blogging. That was not an easy thing to do. Mind you, I've had withdrawal symptoms. Kidding.

So why am I back with blogging now? It all started with the idea of putting up a opm lyrics site. Then after much updating of my lyrics site, I realized I miss blogging. I miss meeting people, I miss making friends over the internet, I miss venting out my thoughts. I miss everything about blogging.

I decided my "comeback" blog to be at Blogger. Why?

* because I want a "new" environment.
* because Xanga's banner on top was kinda annoying.
* I want to connect to everyone. With Xanga, only registered users can comment. If I were the guest, I will not bother to register, just to post a comment. The comment system may not be of big deal to you, but it is to me.
* because I can use my adsense account here. At least I am earning while blogging
* because I can create multiple blogs with my account.

To the Xanga users, please don't get me wrong. I am not discouraging you to use Xanga. These are mere personal reasons. Xanga can have its advantages, too. The automatic subscription without modifying your template is its edge over Blogspot. Their Look and Feel editor is a big help for easier modification of your layouts. The group system also is one great feature. At least it loads faster than Blogger. I am sure, I missed out some important features as I have been out of the Xanga circle for over a year now. What was so nice also of being a Xangan is meeting good friends.

It should be suited for my college website, my own blog (I will import this blog there), my lyrics site (it needs a revamp since it is not indexed yet in Google. I think there's something wrong with my SEO. Hindi ko kasi alam kung pa'no.

Compassion

Being in a state university, with inadequacy of state-of-the-art facilities, we are trained to be as compassionate as possible to our patient. The term encompasses the quality of care we should give to our patients when we're already doctors and the inexpensive approach with regards to treatment. They've been inculcating in our minds that we should think of our patients first before we think of our pockets. And I think, they have been successful because of the good feedbacks to most of our graduates.

Our school is a community-based program and we have been successful with implementing it. In fact, some of our classmates were once invited to a symposium which was I think hosted by UP-PGH. They were asked to share the way we do Community Medicine.

Anyways, I was talking about this because a classmate and I had an argument over using CT scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as one of the diagnostics for our head trauma patient. To differentiate the two, MRI is more sensitive than CT scan in localizing tumors or whatever brain injury especially with deeper structures. So he wanted the patient to undergo MRI while I opted to do a CT scan instead, for financial reasons. He was insisting on MRI because he says the patient is capable to spend money to the said procedure. His point was why hamper the faster diagnosis, thus more prompt treatment, of the patient with a less sensitive tool when you can choose a more reliable one. I was disappointed with his answer. Yeah, these tools can confirm your diagnosis but still a doctor should still give more emphasis to the history and physical examination of the patient. These tools give mere confirmatory findings so there's no need for a more sophisticated one to diagnose. That is if you didn't practice your history and PE well during medical school years. When he heard my rebuttal, he stopped arguing. I hope he realized my point.

It's just sad that some of our physicians subject their patients to very expensive diagnostics and treatment when there are much less expensive options. As they say it, you're just adding insult to the injury.

I've been spending a lot of my time to the internet that sometimes my study habits are affected. To compensate for the time loss, I created a website concerning health issues and problems commonly encountered by the Filipinos. This website also aims to provide comprehensive information of these health issues and problems.

As my first post, I tackled on Breast Cancer. Well this is not so common to Asia women but for the past years, it's incidence had been increasing in Filipino women.

I have also lost an aunt due to breast cancer that's why it's the first on the list.

Meningococcemia alert!

The other day, the hospital beside our college building was shaken by the news of the first suspected meningococcemia in our city. We were actually inside the hospital during that time because we were doing hospital rotations. The patient had only minutes at the hospital before his demise. They got a sample from the patient's lesions and it showed negative. But still the result may be false-positive because the sample was obtained after the patient's death. Everyone who had come in contact with the patient had to take antibiotics. I was also getting paranoid because the disease is known to be fatal. I bought Ciprofloxacin and immediately took it. The night of that day, I got more paranoid when I felt feverish with muscle and joint pains! I was thinking I may have also acquire the disease and was praying that it's just a simple fever. Good thing, I woke up well and alive the next morning. Haha.

One of our school lecturers and a doctor once said that one big problem with medical students is hypochondriasis. Because they know the symptoms of the diseases, they tend to think the worst out of a simple disease. I think she was right. Haha.

I just arrived home from the gym. For a long time now, I have not played badminton because of hectic schedule. The last time I played this game was when I was 2nd year college and it was four years ago. My school activities and the books I have to read do not permit me to do some extracurricular activities. I just realized that I don't have to kill my 'social' life for school. I have to take time management seriously from this time on.

I am also back to my karate classes. This takes up a lot of my energy and time so I only attend classes when I had enough time. I stopped 3 years ago, my batchmates already wear black belts while I am still a poor senior green belter.

Almost at the hospital

I was almost brought to the hospital yesterday.

I woke up early in the morning because I had a terrible tummy ache. I went downstairs and look for food because I thought I was just hungry.

Minutes after, the pain worsen, then I was vomiting and had watery diarrhea. I was imagining the worst scenario. In my mind, I was ruling in and out my diagnoses. My first impression was appendicitis, then I was thinking of pancreatitis and after a while, I was thinking of typhoid fever. Morbid thoughts!

When I can't tolerate the pain anymore, my parents decided to just bring me to the hospital. Good thing, my aunt arrived and gave me an antibiotic and anti-spasmodic which relieved the pain. Thank God. Now, I feel abdominal cramps because of excessive vomiting.

Thank God and my aunt, it could have been my first admission to the hospital. Just the thought of needles and emergency rooms made me scared. Haha. Yeah, I am a medical student but I get scared with hospital facilities sometimes. :D

My Website-making History

Ever since I've started to know the HTML, I tried numerous attempts to make a presentable website.

My first website was a Meteor Garden Fansite. Haha. Yeah, you can laugh at me now. I, muself can't believe I made a fansite for these Taiwanese guys. Being a newbie in website making, I received some rude remarks from my visitors, saying that I better close my site because I don't know web designing. According to them, if you know web design, you SHOULD make your own template. Hell, they didn't know how much effort I've exerted just to make a nice looking template. *rolls eyes* After a month, due mainly to those remarks, I closed my site. Besides, I've decided not to waste my time on those F4 guys.

My second website was about jokes and quotes. It was a Tripod-hosted site. I was getting busy with school at that time so I had to stop updating it. When I revisited it recently, it was closed by the webhost.

I stopped making websites when I joined the Xanga Community. When I was still an active Xanga-er, I used to re-design my site almost every week! I take effort on searching the net for Xanga skins just so I can change my layout. It was easier when you only have to modify the skins compared to make a template yourself. Besides, I still considered myself a 'newbie' to HTML. Due to my dynamic Xanga (with different layouts almost every week. Hehe), I learned a lot of HTML codes, of course, with the aid of tutorials I've searched over the net.

When I entered medical school, I had tapered-off my internet hours so I kinda forgot the little things I've learned.

Sometime in December 2005, I was requested (based on the recommendations of my classmates who happened to be regular lurker at my Xanga to make our school's website. It was not a problem at all, only that I know little about graphic making. I didn't know how to use Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Flash MX. But I was ambitious enough to make a more or less presentable website, so I have to learn Adobe or Flash. I was advised to take lessons on this graphic software but there were financial and time constraints. Again, I resorted to net tutorials. Now, the website is still under construction. Hopefully, I could finish it this summer break.

As a full-time student, I have to depend to my parents for financial support. So I've decided to search the net on making money online. I stumbled upon autosurf sites such as Studiotraffic.com" and others. Since then, I thought of making a website about earnings on the web, and came up with Earningsonline. Again, it's also under construction.

My current project is a website offering FREE mobile contents such as text messages, ringtones and wallpapers and named it as Mobile Online Philippines. Due to the Unlimited Txt Promo by Smart Telecom, I my inbox got full with messages so I came up with an idea of making a website out of those. But I decided to add ringtones and wallpapers I will personally make. I also have seen a simple CSS layout so decided to use it. Exhausting Day!

Sitting for 10 hours, listening to lectures, is really exhausting! We started the seminar at 8 am and ended at 5 pm! I think my butt sores. Haha.

Anyway, it was an emergency cases approaches seminar like acute abdomen, sensorial changes from clouding of consciousness to coma, acute dyspnea or difficulty in breathing, chest pains, poisoning, etc. Some lectures were interesting maybe because of the effort of the lecture not to make the audience sleepy. I fell asleep during lecture about chest pain. The lecturer was fine except that I can't understand his words all because of his "American accent." I don't get it why he has to "sound like an American" when he only have stayed in the states for not more than 5 years during his master's degree. I would have appreciated his lecture better if I had understood what he was talking about. It's not that I don't understand the Americans, it is just that when he speaks he swallows some words to sound "slang" as the Filipinos term it.

During the last parts of the seminar, I just talked with my co-Smallville fan. Haha. We did nothing but talk about Lana Lang and Clark Kent and everything about Smallville.

On being dependent

For my 22 years of existence, I have been dependent to my parents. Yeah, shame on me. When I graduated from college, I was hoping to get a good job where I can finally have money of my own. But I had a pre-medical course (BS Biology) and everybody thought that I should pursue medicine cause that’s where my future is. With my course, if I really want to go to the field related to it, I only had four options at that time – teach, go to research, have a master degree, or go to medical school. I never wanted to teach (though my mother is a teacher) because I think I have little patience, I never wanted to go research because I hated making bunch of papers and experiments were too tiresome for me. I never really appreciated research even when I was in my undergraduate course. Having a master’s degree was not appealing to me because I will land to the same options I had for my bachelor’s degree. Therefore, the only option I have was go to medical school so until now, I am still getting support from my parents.

Pros and cons of being dependent to my parents:

- I do not have to work to get my basic needs; but I sometimes hesitate to ask money from them for luxuries. How sad.
- I have loving parents but strict ones. Sometimes, I still feel like I am that high school girl who needs permission to her parents to do whatever she wants, and sulk if she did not get it. Yesterday, we had our batch outing to rejoice for our success during our second year in medicine but since my father did not allow me, I had to obey. No, hindi ako nagmukmok. I have gotten over that attitude years ago after I have realized that it is of no use when my parents said “No.” They never allow me to go to the beach with friends (it has to be a family outing). We had a cousin kasi who had a vehicular accident when going home after their beach escapade. I cannot accept invitations from some friends to go on a vacation with them because I am restricted. They only allow me if it is school-related like spending over night with classmates to work on some school requirements. Yeah, you might say that I have a boring life, but what can I do? I have pessimistic parents.
- I am assured of daily allowance but sometimes I get reluctant to ask for an extra.
- I am free of household chores, that why until now I don’t know how to cook and do the laundry. I know, I should blame myself for this also. Haha.

So there! I hope your not bored reading about my boring life.

The new OPM!

I am glad that the OPM (Original Pilipino Music) industry is reviving. The 90's was the golden age for OPM because of bands like Eraserheads, Hungry Young Poets (now Barbie's Cradle), Rivermaya, and a lot more.

The last two years were a nightmare because of coming out of the so-called novelty songs. Gladly, new OPM bands have come to revive the industry... the Bamboo comeback, Rivermaya had it's fair share of new releases, there's Hale who captured most girls listeners (I was one of them. Haha), and a lot more. Though, right now, I am disappointed with the revival-of-songs thingy by some artists. I just want them to release originals. For me, I will appreciate them more if they did.

OOT: I want to buy the ultraelectricomagneticJam album. The album contains the original hits of Eraserheads sang by popular artists like Imago, Barbie Almalbis , MYMP, and others.

I'm promoted!

Yesterday, we had our last examination. So it means that, I am promoted to 3rd year. I thought I was not gonna make it, but thank GOD, I did it! For this past few weeks, my medical books served as my companions. You might say that my life's that boring, and yeah, I would somehow agree. I can't even believe that some days passed without accessing the internet. I tagged myself before as CIA (Certified Internet Addict) because my day seemed incomplete if I can't post on my blogs and visit some chosen websites.

And now, research, exam, PBL sessions, and studying are over! Well, at least for 2 months. Being a medical student is really haaaaaaaaard, especially if you can't devote your time wholly to it. Hehe. Like in my case, I am still in the tapering-off-my-internet-hours stage to devote my time to my studying. *sigh*

Anyways, here are my plans for this summer break:

1. Watch TV and DVD's!

2. Finish our school's website! By the way, the link is http://geocities.com/msucomed. I am still looking for a nicer hosting site.

3. Finish my website. It's all about money-making opportunities on the web. The link is http://freewebs.com/earningsonline. It's still under construction.

4. Make some other websites. I would either choose from these or make two or more site, depending on my time: a Tom Welling Fansite (or Smallville), a collection of text messages, quotes and jokes, my favorite shows, and OPM song lyrics (especially of OPM bands). I would gladly accept your suggestions.

5. Study for our next module next semester (well, that is if boredom never strikes again).
